Skating

Skating

A means of propelling oneself forward on skis.  It’s very useful on flat areas that need to be navigated, where gravity provides little or no assistance, or when ascending slight grades, where gravity is actually working against you.  It can also be used when trying to gain speed while descending,  as a supplement to gravity.

It’s done by connecting a series of powerful diverging steps.  Each new step is done with the opposite foot, and in the opposite direction, of the one before.  The ski being skated off of, doesn't touch the snow again, until being skated back onto.
